Hey, Fox sports fans, Dr. Matt Provehncer here. For those of us and joining the Thursday Night Football game, we just saw Calvin Ridley wide receiver go down from the Atlanta Falcons. He makes a great catch, and as he goes down, he's tackled and his left foot looks like it gets trapped between the turf and the player doing the tackle. From my experience, and from what I could tell on the video, this looks to be a sprain of the middle part of his foot, although we have to wait for additional confirmation and more details. What this usually means is an injury to the ligaments here that hold your toes or the long parts of your toes to the rest of your ankle joint. These ligaments are really important for the stability of the foot and to be able to help with push-off the toe-off as well as cutting ability. The injury looks as though his foot may have been trapped and caught in this area, causing a spring to these ligaments. Although it's too early to tell, this does usually mean at least two weeks, perhaps a little bit longer for these ligaments to heal and calm down and if it's a more severe ligament injury, and sometimes that can turn into what we call a Lisfranc Lisfranc injury, where you get bigger ligament injury rate in this big toe area. As long as it's not a Lisfranc Lisfranc, we hope to see him back in a few weeks. But the Lisfranc injury could take much longer when he does come back. We may not see the same Calvin Ridley right away, at least for the first two games, and we would expect from our data anywhere from a six to a 10% decline in overall performance. Hey, Calvin, wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing your return on the NFL field real soon. Download the all-new Fox Sports App now.
